About Us

The 4th Annual Forum on Latino/a Affairs will take place on Friday, April 7, 2017 from 9am to 2pm at the UWM Campus (Union Ballroom), which is hosted by the Latino Student Union. This year we are proud to announce that we will be focusing on the topics of Minority Stress, LGBT and Gentrification in the Milwaukee community.

Mission: We seek to inspire dialogue about pertinent issues affecting our Latino community in Southeastern Wisconsin by hosting designated spaces that allow for such conversations.

Vision: We aim to bring together members and allies of the Latino community in the Southeastern Wisconsin to foster solidarity, community engagement, activism, and leadership.

Clear your calendar - It's going down! Splash Blocks kicks off on April 21st, and you're invited to take part in the festivities. Splash HQ (122 W 26th St) is our meeting spot for a night of fun and excitement. Come one, come all, bring a guest, and hang loose. This is going to be epic!

Our conference co-chairs, Enrique Gracian & Enrique Perez will give a few remarks to welcome you to this year's Forum.

Minority Stress & Mental Health

This panel focuses on the chronically high levels of stress faced by members of stigmatized minority groups. This discussion includes how minority stress may be caused by a number of factors, including poor social support and low socioeconomic status, but the most well understood causes of minority stress are interpersonal prejudice and discrimination.

LGBT Community

Resources for the LGBT community in are available; but the LGBT Latinos--especially new immigrants--face very specific and complicated issues that do not affect other members of the LGBT community. To mention some: language barriers, immigration status, family and social support and alienation, among others.

Gentrification in Milwaukee

Milwaukee is ranked higher than 15 of 50 cities [evaluated] in change of median income (low to high). This discussion focuses on the areas of gentrification in South Side Milwaukee--mainly Walker's Point--of Milwaukee.

Keynote Speaker & Lunch

Conference attendees will be invited get lunch, connect with other attendees, and to listen to a keynote address by Rep. Zamarripa (tentative)

Closing Remarks

Our conference board members will highlight main themes from the conference and to thank conference attendees.

Advisory Board Member

Enrique is a 4th year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Program, and has served on the planning committee for the Forum since it's inception 4 years ago.

Enrique Perez

Chair

Enrique, a senior undergrad studying in Computer Engineering, has served on the Forum board since the first annual forum, and has served as Co-chair last year and chair this year for the Forum.

Andrea Del Zocorro Lozano

Board Member

Andrea Del Zocorro Lozano, a sophmore undergrad studying French, has joined the Forum board this year as the President of the Latino Student Union at UWM.

Gabriela Nagy

(inactive) Advisory Board Member

Gaby is a 6th year doctoral student in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. Gaby has served as Chair of the Forum for the first 2 years, and has served on the Advisory Board llast year for the 3rd Annual Forum.
